The Challenge
More than 35 million Americans struggle with hunger while the U.S. wastes more than 72 billion pounds of pre-consumer food each year. Reducing food waste can mitigate climate change and feed hungry people but change at scale will require overcoming many barriers and a dramatic acceleration of food rescue.
Large-scale challenges threaten to increase the national meal gap, annually more than 8 billion meals, and exacerbate demographic disparities, making it harder for vulnerable populations to access nutritious food.
The Food Security Council
In 2018, Feeding America formed the Food Security Council (FSC) to provide guidance to Feeding America on these targeted, high-level challenges, with a focus on leveraging leading-edge capabilities and systems change to transform hunger alleviation in the United States.
Council members are passionate about ending hunger, committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and uniquely qualified to help accelerate our mission through transformational thought leadership.
