The Director of Public Benefits leads Food Bank for the Heartland’s strategy to expand access to SNAP and other public benefits across Nebraska and Iowa. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously improving programs that connect individuals and families to critical resources.
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director drives multi-state strategy, ensures compliance with federal and state requirements, and leverages data to identify gaps and scale high-impact solutions. The role partners with government agencies, community organizations, and internal teams to reduce barriers to access and strengthen community outcomes.
This position also provides leadership to a high-performing team, oversees program operations and funding requirements, and represents the organization in community and policy settings.
The ideal candidate brings strong experience in public benefits systems, strategic leadership, and cross-sector collaboration, along with a passion for advancing equitable access to resources and addressing food insecurity.
Lead and execute a multi-state public benefits strategy across Nebraska and Iowa, focused on expanding access to SNAP and other resources.
Identify gaps in benefit access using data and implement scalable, high-impact solutions.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and funding requirements, including reporting and performance metrics.
Build and maintain partnerships with government agencies, community organizations, and key stakeholders.
Oversee program operations, systems, and processes to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.
Manage department budget and align resources with strategic priorities.
Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team.
Represent the organization in community, advocacy, and policy settings.
Collaborate cross-functionally to align public benefits strategy with broader organizational goals.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience.
Minimum of five years of progressive leadership experience in public benefits, human services, or a related field.
Strong knowledge of SNAP and public benefits systems, policy, and funding structures.
Experience leading programs, teams, and cross-functional initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to use data to inform strategy and drive results.
Strong communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Ability to navigate complex systems and lead through change in a fast-paced environment.
