Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief and food rescue organization, today brings supporters the ability to donate with Apple Pay.
Within the fundraising landscape, there is a trend that donor behavior is mirroring consumer behavior. According to Blackbaud, a cloud software company powering social good, digital giving has now reached 7.1% of fundraising for nonprofit organizations compared to 7.4% of retail sales from e-commerce. Nearly 14% of all online donations in 2015 were made using a mobile device.
Donating in apps and on websites accepting Apple Pay is as simple as the touch of a finger with Touch ID, so there’s no need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in billing information.
“Donor behavior is constantly changing and we want to be able to quickly respond to those changes,” said Liz Nielsen, Acting Senior Vice President of Direct Marketing & Digital. “Apple Pay lets Feeding America offer our donors a checkout experience that is as easy and fast as the best e-commerce experiences. Mobile technology is critical to growing support for Feeding America and ultimately get more food to more people facing hunger in our country.”
When you use a credit or debit card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device. Each transaction is authorized with a one-time unique dynamic security code.
There are more than 42 million people in the U.S. who live at risk of hunger. Providing food to people facing hunger is a massive undertaking that involves a network of 200 food banks, 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. By further optimizing technological systems used with donors, Feeding America can maximize its ability to provide food to families and individuals in need.
