Disney Donates $1 Million to Feeding America to Help Inspire Healthier Generations and Promote Nationwide Access to Nutritious Foods

November 2, 2016

Feeding America® commends The Walt Disney Company for its Healthy Living Commitment and $1 million donation to help food banks expand their local fresh produce sourcing and distribution programs that serve kids and families who need it most. The donation was announced on ABC’s “The Chew” yesterday and kicked off Disney's "Share the Joy" campaign inspiring families to spread goodwill around the globe this holiday season by giving to others and volunteering in their local communities.

During "The Chew" segment, two graduates of the Philabundance Community Kitchen—an adult culinary arts vocation program at the Feeding America member food bank in Philadelphia—were also featured, highlighting how the program helped them thrive in the culinary industry.

This year, as part of Disney’s “Share the Joy” campaign, Feeding America and Disney will expand access to healthy living options in neighborhoods where kids and families live, work and play. Increasing access to nutritious foods and engaging audiences to take action is part of Disney’s commitment to healthy living and its long-standing effort to create healthier generations. Disney|ABC Television Group also will inspire audiences to donate nutritious foods through Feeding America with a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that will run across multiple platforms, including ABC, Freeform, Disney Channel and Disney XD through December. Additionally, ABC-owned television stations in local markets will host volunteer events with local food banks.

Feeding America is the largest hunger-relief and food rescue organization in the United States, with a network of 200 member food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. Last year, the network distributed 4 billion meals. As it strives to provide nutritious meals to more people in need, sourcing produce is a priority.

“Fresh fruits and vegetables are one of the most important components of any balanced diet. Providing more produce is an important way in which we can help the people we serve have the building blocks for a healthy life,” said Diana Aviv, CEO of Feeding America. “We are excited to work with Disney to help improve the health of the 46 million people, including 12 million children, we serve each year."
