Feeding America statement on the Senate Agriculture Committee reconciliation bill text

Our neighbors facing hunger, regardless of political affiliation, agree that ending food insecurity should be a priority for Congress. They consistently shared that they want the same things we all want for ourselves, including access to fresh, nutritious food.  Further, new Feeding America polling shows 4 out of 5 registered voters across the political spectrum oppose cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid, including nearly 60% of Republicans, 88% of Independents, and 92% of Democrats.

With this in mind, we believe the bill text released by the Senate Agriculture Committee threatens food and health security in America at a time when food insecurity is at its highest level in over a decade.

While SNAP can be improved, this bill doesn’t offer solutions. Instead of deep cuts, Feeding America strongly urges Congress to protect and improve SNAP and Medicaid. We oppose these harmful cuts and will oppose any legislation that would worsen hunger for millions of people. The Feeding America network stands ready, alongside our neighbors facing hunger, to work with our nation’s leaders to advance policies that ensure everyone has access to the food and health care they need to thrive.
