Feeding America launches nationwide effort to elevate SNAP’s role in helping families and communities stay strong

July 15, 2026

Feeding America today launched SNAP Supports—a nationwide effort to strengthen public understanding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and what it means for people across America. The effort comes at a pivotal moment as states prepare to implement significant changes to SNAP, including a shift in program costs, making clear public understanding of the program more important than ever. SNAP is the nation’s largest federal nutrition program, providing a reliable source of support for millions of families working to put food on the table. As a public benefit program, SNAP complements the work of food banks, food pantries and meal programs by helping households stretch their food budgets while food assistance organizations provide additional support when needs exceed available resources.

Grounded in facts and focused on real experiences, Feeding America will elevate how SNAP helps neighbors facing hunger navigate difficult times while strong federal nutrition programs remain essential. As rising costs and economic pressures are increasing demand for food assistance and states prepare for significant changes, programs like SNAP are more critical than ever.

“Every day, we meet parents doing everything they can to provide for their families. When life's circumstances become overwhelming—a lost job, an illness, rising costs—no one should have to wonder where their next meal will come from,” said Denis McDonough, CEO, Feeding America. “SNAP helps families through those moments, giving children the nourishment they need to learn and grow while helping parents regain their footing with dignity. Together with food banks and local organizations, it is part of the support that keeps neighbors, communities and our country stronger."

Feeding America is also amplifying states’ calls for Congress to delay the shift of significant SNAP costs to states and allow time for thoughtful implementation of recent program changes. At the same time, strong federal investments in programs that supply food to food banks will help ensure families can fill immediate food gaps as SNAP undergoes changes.

Feeding America will amplify the stories of real people, like Vergie, a neighbor from Georgia, to show SNAP is not an abstract policy debate. It is a proven program that works alongside food banks, farmers, grocers and local organizations to keep families stable, children learning and communities strong.

“I’m working hard to pay the bills, but SNAP is also helping me to provide for my children as well,” said Vergie. “I won’t have to worry about my children going without. It’s good to see them smiling,” Vergie said. “When they finish eating, they tell me, ‘Mom, I’m full.’ You know, that brings me joy. And I know that SNAP benefits helped me with this.”

SNAP is part of a broader support system that helps people regain stability while supporting jobs, local businesses and stronger economies. Safeguarding and modernizing federal nutrition programs will help keep American communities  resilient and strong for the long term.

Feeding America is calling Congress to delay the SNAP cost shift to states for two years so states have the time they say they need to prepare for changes to the program, and families and communities can maintain access to the food they need to thrive.
