General Description/Position Summary
This is a tremendous opportunity for a mission-driven, collaborative leader, marketing and communications expert, and strategic advisor to have direct impact on positively contributing to the St. Louis Area Foodbank's vision of a nutritionally secure Missouri and Illinois.

The Director of Marketing and Communications will help elevate the awareness of and affinity for the work of the St. Louis Area Foodbank in serving the region with its various constituents through the development of messaging, materials, and activities. The Director of Marketing and Communications will serve as Brand Ambassador as well as lead public relations (PR) initiatives both proactively and in response to crisis and will be the primary media liaison for the organization.  The Director of Marketing and Communications will be an integral member of the Foodbank's Leadership Team.

The St. Louis Area Foodbank has been growing steadily during the past 10 years and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. We are seeking to dramatically accelerate our growth, impact, and influence in the communities we serve across 26 counties in the bi-state region (Illinois and Missouri).

Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy & Management
•    Develop and execute Marketing and Communications strategies that further the mission of the Foodbank through collaboration with key stakeholders.
•    Identify and measure departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in service of organization wide KPIs.
•    Contribute to the evolution of organizational strategies as a member of the organization’s Leadership Team.
•    Ensure appropriate systems, staffing, and procedures are in place to support Marketing and Communications strategies.
•    Develop and monitor departmental annual budget and track expenses accordingly.

Brand Management
•    Ensure alignment of brand identity, messaging, and marketing and communications strategies in all organizational efforts and deliverables (programming, philanthropy, volunteers, etc.).
•    Develop, implement, and evaluate marketing campaigns related to programs, events, fundraising, volunteerism, and brand awareness.

Content Strategy and Management
•    Oversee the development, design, distribution, and maintenance of high-quality print and digital pieces.
•    Collaborate with Development/Philanthropy staff on creation and execution of fundraising appeals.
•    Lead the strategy and generation of engaging content for the St. Louis Area Foodbank’s website (https://stlfoodbank.org) and various social media channels.
•    Create and circulate talking points for use by internal and external stakeholders.
•    Serves as writer for Foodbank stories and other content.

Media Relations
•    Actively solicit media coverage and serve as one of the primary media spokespersons for the organization.
•    Construct and distribute news releases/media advisories for initiatives and activities of the Foodbank.
•    Arrange for and manage media visits, events, and photo opportunities.
•    Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Application qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, public relations, or communications.  
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant and increasingly responsible experience in the Marketing and Communications field required. Non-profit experience preferred.
  • At least 5 years of managerial and staff supervision experience required.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills and strategic mindset.
  • Experience in media relations and story placement is essential.
  • Experience serving as organization spokesperson a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to successfully pass pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check.

•    The St. Louis Area Foodbank (SLAFB) is a member of Feeding America, which is a national network of 200 food banks all working together for the common goal of ensuring equitable access to nutritious food. This nationwide network offers a variety of resources, like food, funds, and best practices. 
•    The St. Louis Area Foodbank serves 26 counties, 14 in Missouri and 12 in Illinois, by collecting food from a variety of sources, such as manufacturers, retail stores, farmers, and individual donors; storing, sorting, and repackaging that food at the highest safety standards; and finally distributing that food to our network of agencies and programs, which work directly with people in the community.

Additional information

Work Schedule
•    Monday - Friday onsite at the SLAFB facility and in the community as needed.
•    However, flexibility will be granted as appropriate in accordance with the SLAFB's Remote Work/Working From Home Policy.
•    Occasional weekend (Saturday/Sunday) or evening hours may be required.
•    Meeting attendance may require overnight travel.
