Wondering what the government shutdown means for you? Here’s what you need to know
The government shutdown has created uncertainty for millions of individuals and families who receive benefits from federal nutrition programs, like SNAP and WIC. You’re not alone in wondering “what does a government shutdown mean for me and my family?” Read below for answers to some common questions about how a federal government shutdown could affect food assistance.
And if you’re one of the more than 2 million federal employees or many people who work for a federal contractor who may miss paychecks during the shutdown, read on for how you can get temporary help from your local food bank. While we don’t know for sure how long the shutdown will last, the Feeding America network is ready to assist individuals and families who need help today, tomorrow and beyond.
Q: I need help accessing food. What should I do?
Your local food bank can help you find food today by connecting you to partner food pantries and meal programs in your community that provide free food.
Use Feeding America’s food bank finder to locate the food bank in your community.
Q: I am a federal employee or contractor who needs food assistance. Can I get help from a food bank until the government reopens?
Yes. Food banks across the country are available to federal employees, people who work for federal contractors and other individuals impacted by the shutdown. Although there are rules that prohibit federal employees from accepting gifts from the public, you are allowed to receive charitable assistance from nonprofits and other organizations that aid their communities.
If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can also apply for SNAP—a program that provides monthly funds to help people buy groceries. If you aren’t already enrolled in the program, the Feeding America network can help you apply for SNAP.
Q: Will I still get my SNAP benefits this month?
Yes. SNAP benefits for October will be available in full and on time.
Q: Can I still apply for SNAP benefits?
Yes, even if the federal government is shut down, you can still apply for SNAP, and we don’t expect changes to the application process throughout October. SNAP application assistance is available through the Feeding America network.
Q: Will I still receive my WIC benefits?
States will continue issuing WIC benefits as long as possible, though in some states that may be a matter of days or weeks. Contact your local WIC office for more information on how benefits will be impacted in your state.
Q: Will my child still be able to get school meals?
Yes. Meal programs for children are expected to operate as normal through October. This includes school breakfast, lunch and after-school meals offered through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
Q: I participate in a senior food box program. What does the shutdown mean for me?
You should receive your food box this month. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), or senior food box program, should not be disrupted in October.
