POSITION OVERVIEW
The Regional Protein Sourcer will join a dynamic collaboration that aims to build relationships and processes through partnerships in the Texas region with the goal of sourcing nutritious protein donations to support individuals facing food insecurity in the Southwest region. This individual will work collaboratively with a large, diverse group of individuals to build this innovative program. This role will work closely with donors and food banks throughout Texas and surrounding states to coordinate the sourcing of bulk protein donations, which will be repackaged into family/retail sizes at the Houston Food Bank’s (HFB) Protein Pack Room. This position works in close collaboration with HFB to develop and implement a seamless process to source and process bulk protein.

Sourcing protein is a new area of focus for the CFP and this role will lead our efforts in this new space.

Job responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Build partnerships with the protein industry and other food channels (including local and regional foods producers).
• Build partnership with Food Banks and state and national food bank associations.
• Support development of a food sourcing strategy designed to maximize the sourcing of donated/low cost protein.
• Build a strong pipeline of potential donors through prospecting, cold calling and donor stewardship.
• Manage the logistics and offering of available product with timeliness and effective customer service.
• Manage orders to include accurate tracking of loads, costs, destinations, including Invoice review and submission.
• Develop processes with food banks and protein donors to set up a seamless transition of product flowing from donors to food banks.
• Travel throughout Texas and surrounding states to develop relationships with food banks and potential donors.
• Attend domestic protein expos with the goal of developing relationships with potential donors in the region.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A strong commitment to the CFP vision and mission.

• Ability to work collaboratively across diverse functional teams while maintaining positive relationships.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and professional demeanor with ability to positively represent the CFP and food banks to external audiences and the public.
• Strong organizational, negotiating and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent time management skills and long-range planning abilities.
• Computer literacy and data entry skills; experience with Excel and product tracking software preferred.
• Understanding of both the commercial and charitable food supply chains.
• Ability to gather information from a variety of sources, plan, organize and effectively present concepts and recommendations to groups.
• Desire to work in a changing environment that supports program growth.
• Ability to work with a customer/donor focus, keeping all customer needs at top of mind.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Minimum of 5 years of sourcing, procurement, or distribution experience in the fresh foods industry, with a preference for experience in the protein sourcing or manufacturing space.
• Fluent in written and oral English (Spanish a plus).
• For insurance purposes, must be at least 21 years of age; possess a current and valid Driver License, have a safe driving record and reliable personal vehicle.
• Knowledge of food safety and proper food storage and handling techniques preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
• Previous experience in food bank sourcing or logistics preferred but not required.
• Experience in business/account sales development and management preferred but not required.

About the organization

THE COLLABORATIVE FOR FRESH PRODUCE(CFP)

The Collaborative for Fresh Produce (CFP) is a nonprofit organization that sources and distributes surplus food to those in need through partnerships with growers and food banks. CFP was founded by Feeding Texas, the state association of food banks, and is one of eleven Regional Produce Collaboratives (RPC) supported by Feeding America, the nation’s network of food banks. CFP works closely with other collaboratives and food bank staff across the Southwest to source donations of surplus food and then manages the logistics of getting it to food banks in shipments that are the right size and mix for each individual community.

TRAVEL
• Ability and willingness to travel up to 50% of time on job.

HOURS
• 8:30am-5:00pm, with occasional after hours and weekends.

COMPENSATION

Salary range is $60,000-$80,000 depending upon experience and qualifications. Employer offers a competitive benefits package. This is a twelve-to-fifteen-month grant-funded position with the potential to continue dependent on funding.
