Crushing Hunger: One Can of Tomatoes at a Time

Red Gold product donation
October 24, 2016

As a family-owned company, Red Gold was founded on the idea of helping to supply food for the troops in 1942, and four generations later, we are continuing our commitment to caring for communities through the ‘Crush Hunger’ campaign.

Our company mission is to produce the freshest, best tasting, tomato products in the world, and who better to help us grow our products than local family farms? Because we work directly with local families to grow our tomatoes, we understand the importance of family and giving back to the community. We have donated to communities that were affected by Hurricane Katrina, the flooding in South Carolina and, most recently, the devastating flooding in Baton Rouge. We were honored to give over 23 tons of Red Gold canned products to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to help this community get back on their feet in October.

Although our family spends a lot of time working together to produce our tomatoes, our fondest memories have always happened around the dinner table enjoying a family meal. Because we know the power of the family meal, we jumped at the opportunity to work with Feeding America to take our commitment to helping others nationally.

This October, Red Gold has partnered with Feeding America to launch its first national giving initiative – ‘Families Helping Families’ Crush Hunger, harnessing the power of the family meal to help others in need.  For each Red Gold canned tomato product purchased in the month of October (including our sister brands: Redpack, Sacramento, and Tuttorosso), Red Gold will donate one meal to people in need – with a goal of providing 1.7 million meals to Feeding America food banks nationwide.

As part of the campaign, we’ve also collaborated with celebrity chef, YouTube personality and host of the Cooking Channel’s “Simply Laura”, Laura Vitale, where Laura will lend her culinary expertise, tips and simple approach to cooking to help parents create easy, affordable meals to share with their families during October and beyond. As part of the campaign, Laura created her own one-pot 30-minute recipe that is perfect for families on-the-go and on a budget. Be sure to try her Chili Mac and Cheese using Red Gold Petite Diced Tomatoes with Green Chilies for your family’s dinner this fall!

We have also enlisted the support of TV personality and author Nan Kelley as a regional spokesperson who is supporting us in crushing hunger!

To help spread the word, we’re encouraging families to join the conversation on social media by sharing their family meal experience or how they help crush hunger via Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter using the hashtag #HelpCrushHunger.  Each week, a winner will be selected who will receive a Red Gold meal kit and a $100 donation in their name to their local food bank.

We couldn’t be more proud of our partnership with Feeding America, but we know we can’t fight the hunger crisis in America alone. Together, we can all do our part as a community to help families in need create their own moments around the dinner table.

The campaign will last through the month of October. Please visit HelpCrushHunger.com for more information on how you can participate or RedGoldTomatoes.com to learn more about Red Gold.

Because it’s about more than just tomatoes, it’s about keeping our families fed.
