Advancing Food as Medicine Nationwide
Since 2004, Elevance Health Foundation has been a transformative partner in Feeding America’s work to connect food access and health care. Through a visionary $14.1 million investment in 2022, the Foundation funded Food as Medicine 3.0 (FAM3): the largest national food as medicine evaluation focusing on healthy grocery provision through food bank and health care partner programs.
Across 21 food banks in 13 states, FAM3 has screened more than 1.45 million patients for food insecurity, connecting more than 161,000 households to healthy food and whole-person care —demonstrating that consistent access to nutritious food through food bank-health care partnerships improves nutrition and health-related outcomes.
Food banks are trusted community hubs uniquely positioned to bridge food access and health care. Elevance Health Foundation’s sustained commitment to a Food as Medicine approach demonstrates that food banks—with their trusted community relationships and deep local reach—are critical partners in addressing the health impacts of hunger.
