Summer meals fuel this 7-year-old’s creative spirit

If you want to learn about YouTubers or animators, 7-year-old Gwen is the perfect guide.

“When I grow up, I want to be a YouTuber that does animation and also some gaming,” she shares enthusiastically. “It plays a big part in my life. It gets me in the mood to laugh.”

Gwen lives in Maine with her mom, Rebekah, her stepdad Zach, and her brother Erik. Her days are filled with creativity—drawing, painting, and dreaming of the stories she wants to bring to life. But behind her bright smile and big dreams, Gwen is also facing a challenge.

Due to a health condition, Gwen needs a diet rich in fresh produce, high fiber, and protein. But those foods can be expensive, especially as her family works to get back on their feet.

After facing her own health challenges, Gwen’s mom, Rebekah, recently started a full-time job. Zach is working part-time while completing his medical residency. Even with their hard work, money is tight—especially when it comes to healthy food.

That’s where the local summer meals program makes a big difference. Gwen and her brother get free, nutritious meals at a nearby library, helping their family stretch their budget while ensuring the kids stay healthy.

“They always have sunflower seeds, which are good for fiber,” Gwen shares excitedly. “I love whenever I can have food that is just good for all of us.”

Each summer meal includes a balanced mix of a sandwich, fruit, veggies, and milk—exactly what Gwen needs for her health. But the meals aren’t just about nutrition—they’re also a chance for Gwen to play with friends, do activities, and be a kid.

“I feel like when I draw, I can do anything. It comes to life,” she says with a smile.

For Gwen, these summer meals mean more than just a full plate—they mean freedom to play, create, and dream without worrying about hunger. And as her family continues to work toward stability, the meals offer peace of mind.

“I feel very helped, and I feel like whenever I get down, someone will always be there to help me back up,” Gwen says.

Through summer meals, Gwen has the fuel to dream big—and a community that makes sure she never has to worry about going without.
