Real Story of Hunger: Meet Ortilia and Tyrone

Ortilia and Tyrone were working hard to provide a happy life for their three children when they were suddenly faced with hard times. Unemployment and poverty disproportionately affect African Americans — making combatting hunger even harder

African American households have a significantly lower household income than white, non-Hispanic households. African Americans are also more than twice as likely to face hunger.

  • The 10 counties with the highest food insecurity rates in the nation are at least 60% African American. Seven of the 10 counties are located in Mississippi.
  • Poverty rates for African Americans in 2017 were more than twice that of white, non-Hispanic individuals.
  • 10% of African Americans live in deep poverty (less than 50% of the federal poverty threshold).

Feeding America reaches African American households every day

The Feeding America network is here to help — serving nearly 1 in 3 African Americans in the U.S. Together, we are working to ensure that every family has the opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty and achieve a hunger-free future. But we cannot continue our work without you.

Give to Feeding America today

Every dollar donated helps the Feeding America network of food banks secure and distribute at least 10 meals to people facing hunger — including African American families who need our help.
