More than a meal: helping families celebrate Thanksgiving
For many families, Thanksgiving is a time to gather around the table and enjoy familiar traditions. But with grocery costs stretching household budgets, preparing a holiday meal can bring added financial pressure.
In Denver, Colorado, Gayle is helping families celebrate the holiday with one less thing to worry about.
As a volunteer specialist with Volunteers of America, Gayle helps coordinate holiday food distributions that provide neighbors with groceries for their Thanksgiving meals.
"Our community thrives on various ways to volunteer, with Thanksgiving basket giveaways being one of them," Gayle said.
Through the program, families receive food baskets and grocery vouchers that allow them to shop for additional items for their holiday meals.
That flexibility gives families the opportunity to prepare meals that reflect their own holiday traditions, whether it's a favorite family recipe or something special for the Thanksgiving table.
Volunteers of America is a partner agency of Food Bank of the Rockies, a member of the Feeding America network. Their partnership helps connect families with food and additional support during the holiday season.
For Gayle, the work is especially meaningful because of what Thanksgiving represents to her.
"Thanksgiving is all about family and being grateful, and it's heartening to know that we can provide support so that families can gather around the table without the worry of having enough food," she said.
Holiday food distributions like these are possible because of local organizations and volunteers who understand the needs of their communities. Their efforts help families manage the additional costs of the season while continuing to celebrate in ways that matter to them.
Gayle hopes her experience encourages others to get involved, whether by volunteering or supporting organizations working to address hunger in their communities.
"We are all in this together, and by coming together, we can make a difference," she said.
