The America Gives More Act Passes

American Gives More Act passes the House

All year Feeding America advocates have taken time out of their busy schedules to urge their Members of Congress to pass legislation that helps bring us closer to a hunger-free America. I know it can feel repetitive and frustrating—dealing with Congress almost always is—but today I’m happy to report that work paid off.

Today, Congress voted to pass legislation that included the America Gives More Act, which will help reduce food waste and provide billions of more meals to food banks and hungry families across the country by making it easier to donate food to food banks. From Feeding America and 46 million people we serve—thank you!

The America Gives More Act is an important policy solution to food waste. The bill extends three charitable giving incentives, including the food donation tax deduction. Most importantly, it expands the food donation tax deduction to small businesses, ranchers, and farmers and makes the deduction permanent.

But we can’t stop there!

Unfortunately, while we came really close, we couldn’t get Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) over the finish line in 2015. Getting legislation through Congress is never easy, but the clock is ticking, summer will be here before we know it, and then it will be too late.

What can be more important than ensuring our nation’s kids have access to nutritious food all year round?

This is why in 2016 we will keep fighting to pass a stronger Child Nutrition Reauthorization. But we’ll need your help.

E-mail your members of Congress and tell them to make Child Nutrition Reauthorization their top priority in 2016.

Thank you for all of your work this year. We’ve made so much progress, and I’m looking forward to an even better 2016.
