Disney|ABC seeks to inspire communities to envision a future where kids and families have access to nutritious food
The Walt Disney Company and Disney|ABC Television Group, announced their continued investment with Feeding America and is providing $1 million to strengthen local produce programs in Feeding America member food banks across the country.
The Feeding America network provides meals to more than 46 million people, including 12 million children each year. Disney’s commitment will provide grants to 60 Feeding America member food banks across the country, helping to empower the network of food banks in rescuing and distributing produce to underserved families by inspiring creative approaches to impact local change.
This support will enable Feeding America to rescue more of the billions of pounds of produce that goes to waste in the United States each year.
Increasing access to nutritious foods, including fresh produce, and engaging audiences to take action is part of Disney's long-standing commitment to healthy living which partners with parents and inspires kids to eat better, be more active and be their best.
Check out how last year’s grant recipients benefitted from generous funding from Disney:
Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago, Illinois
This investment allowed us to provide a variety of fruits and vegetables through the Healthy Kids Market school-based pantry initiative, which serves students and families through a total of 37 schools across Cook County. Healthy Kids Markets utilize a “full choice” model of distribution, whereby families select the food they wish to receive. On average, each family receives approximately 19 pounds of food per distribution. Fresh fruits and vegetables currently make up approximately 75 percent of all food provided through the markets, in addition to shelf-stable items such a peanut butter, pasta, rice and beans. As a result, parents are able to prepare healthy meals for their children in the evenings and over the weekend, narrowing the meal gap experienced by many students across Cook County.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, Charlotte, North Carolina
Grant funding was used to purchase produce to distribute to children participating in some of our Kids Cafe and Backpack programs. We worked hard this year to provide more fresh produce so food-insecure children could share with their families. Items included in the backpacks that go home with children participating in the Backpack program are low salt, low sugar and low fat, shelf stable items. Though these items are healthy, fresh produce is an even healthier choice that we want to provide as often as we can. The best way to do this is to distribute the produce along with the bag of nutritious, ready-to-eat food that kids participating in the program take home each Friday. More healthy foods not only help provide children with the proper nutrition they need to be ready to learn in the classroom, but it helps reduce the risk of obesity and food related diseases like diabetes and heart disease. We believe it is important to teach children about and help them appreciate fresh fruit and vegetables so they understand the importance of healthy food choices.
Since 2012, Disney has provided millions of dollars in support to Feeding America initiatives.
This year, as part of Disney’s “Share the Joy” campaign, Feeding America and Disney will expand access to healthy living options in neighborhoods where kids and families live, work and play.
