Our research shows kids struggling to get enough to eat are more likely to have problems in school and other social situations. That’s why it’s so important to make sure kids have access to nutritious meals, even in the summer. Of the 22 million children who receive free and reduced-price lunch during the school year, only four million continue to receive subsidized meals in the summer, despite the 50,000 summer meal locations nationwide. SNAP helps millions of low-income Americans put food on the table. But proving eligibility for SNAP can be difficult or confusing, since applicants are required to provide several documents. At Feeding America, we know that for the 1 in 6 children in the U.S. who may not know where they will get their next meal, wondering if they will be served lunch at school can be an additional source of stress. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is requiring states and school districts to establish written policies on how they will handle delinquent meal accounts in an effort to minimize “lunch shaming” practices. Through our nationwide network of food banks and food pantries, we see how important local organizations are to their communities in the fight to help end hunger in America. Hillside Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Georgia is a prime example.
