The Controversial Reason Tens of Thousands of People Just Lost Their Food Stamps | Washington Post

In 1996, the federal government put a mandate on participants who receive benefits from the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) that if they did not have children or a disability -- they must find a job within three months of receiving the benefit. That mandate was suspended following the mortgage crisis amid widespread unemployment. On April 1, 21 states brought back the requirement despite a differing economic reality for many people using the benefit and seeking help from our food banks.
