The Fourth of July is one of America’s favorite holidays, filled with barbecues and fireworks. But amidst the festivities, it’s important to remember that veterans make it possible for us to celebrate our country’s independence.

Sadly, many military personnel face hunger as they struggle to negotiate the complex stages of military life — from deployment to returning home to life as a veteran. There are veterans across our country like Harold, who suffered an injury and severe depression during his time at war and needed help getting back on his feet. Harold received food and a fresh outlook on life from his local food pantry, but there are many veterans that still need help — maybe in your own community.

You can help veterans receive the meals and hope they need to reach for a better tomorrow. This month and all year round join us in supporting veterans by taking these simple actions:

  • Thank Veterans for Their Service. Veterans put their lives on the line to serve our country — and now many may face the challenge of not having enough to eat. A small act of kindness could help brighten a veteran’s day. Show gratitude to military families that we serve across the nation: Sign our card to thank them for their service ›
  • Volunteer at Your Local Food Bank. Your local food bank can give you information on volunteering to help people facing hunger in your community. Some food banks have programs designed specifically to serve veterans and they need your help. Find your local food bank ›
  • Learn More About Veterans and Hunger. Understanding the issues veterans face is a huge step in the right direction. Of the households Feeding America serves, 1 in 5 has at least one member who has served in the U.S. military. And we’re finding new ways to reach veterans; recently we partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to reach even more veterans in need through establishing food pantries at VA Medical Centers. Just as our military heroes have provided us with safety and security beyond our borders, we must, in turn, provide them with a safe and secure future here at home. This Fourth of July, let’s honor our courageous veterans by raising awareness of the challenges they may face, providing them with nutritious meals and recognizing them for their unwavering commitment to our nation.
