Description

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) is seeking a team-oriented leader with the accounting and financial background to help carry forward its mission to lead a network of partners in eliminating hunger and promoting better nutrition.

The person in this position will be responsible for helping with the financial reporting of the organization as well as payables processing and daily accounting functions. This position reports to the Director of Finance and Human Resources, and is primarily responsible for supporting SHFBM in carrying out its mission by insuring the timely and accurate processing of accounting transactions and reporting. The position will require access to sensitive and confidential information; discretion is required in this role.

Job responsibilities

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the day to day accounting and finance functions of the organization. Primary responsibility is in the following areas:

Management:
• Oversight of all accounts and supervision of Accounting Technician
• Maintain and enforce documented system of accounting policies and procedures
• Ensure donations are correctly accounted for working with Development staff as
needed
• Coordinate provision of information to external auditors for annual audits

Transactional:
• Accounts payable paid in a timely manner and all funds used for grants are
recorded and documentation provided where necessary
• Cash receipts balancing and daily control (including event receipts)
• Assistance with Human Resources responsibilities including timely and accurate
payroll processing, and benefits administration
• Bank reconciliations for all bank accounts
• Other Balance Sheet reconciliations as requested
• Ensure accounting controls over payables, receivables, accruals, cash
• Complete credit applications as needed

Reporting:
• Assist with annual budget preparation
• Assist with monthly preparation of financial package including accruals, recording
transactions, and variance analysis
• Issue annual 1099s to vendors and file with IRS

This position is intended to eventually take over for our Director of Finance and Human Resources who plans to retire in the next several years. Pending performance, our goal would be to transition the Senior Accountant to the position of Director of Finance and Human Resources which is a key member of the SHFBM management team and reports directly to the CEO.

Application qualifications

• CPA required with significant experience in GAAP accounting
• Public accounting experience preferred; nonprofit experience a plus
• High level of technology skills and proficient with Microsoft Excel
• High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Supervisory experience required
• Human Resources experience a plus

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHMETROLINA) strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. SHMETROLINA has been in existence since 1981.

We provide a regional distribution warehouse and branches that supply food and grocery items to charitable agencies that assist people in need. We provide training, technical assistance and hunger education to our partner agencies.
