The Director of Development and Marketing works closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Development Officer (CDO) to develop and implement a strategy for corporate and major gift relationship management (manage, nurture, upgrade) to meet short and long-term goals of the organization. The primary objective is to increase financial donations to the Mid-South Food Bank and develop long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions, and values. Build and manage the brand identity and all aspects of marketing and communications across the Mid-South Food Bank’s (MSFB) service area to raise awareness of the charity and its programs through the Mid-South area.
A successful candidate must be passionate about our mission and the families we serve. Also work with a variety of volunteers, including board members, who support and help the organization, and will be sensitive to the needs of passions of a diverse staff.
Cultivation and Stewardship
Manage all aspects of the major gifts program for Mid-South Food Bank, including solicitation of new donations and supervising annual gifts of $5,000 or more from all financial supporters of the Mid-South Food Bank.
Diligent with appropriate follow-up and follow-through.
Write clearly and concisely, using multiple platforms to reach diverse audiences, effective public speaker and presenter.
Create an annual comprehensive development plan, in collaboration with the CEO, with targeted goals, objectives, methods, and quantifiable outcomes which will achieve budgeted goals.
Manage, with the exception of the direct mail program, donations and gifts of less than $5,000 to include solicitation of new donations and upgrading current donors to the major gift category. The activity relating to these under $5,000 donations should comprise approximately 15% of the time.
Convey the energy, meaning, and importance of MSFB’s mission and work.
Establish and maintain a donor cultivation cycle and gift stewardship program to ensure that new major donors are developed, have opportunities to increase their level of support annually and enjoy a close relationship with the Mid-South Food Bank.
Develop strategic funding requests based on immediate and long-term funding goals of the organization for high net worth individuals and corporations as appropriate.
Responsible for researching, cultivating, soliciting, and closing major gifts and for equipping and prompting the CEO and CDO in the relationship management process for individual major gift donors including conducting prospect solicitation briefings with CEO and CDO.
Supervise research and produce grant applications as appropriate. Partner with the Grant Manager and maintain a calendar of grant and report deadlines and respond as required. Establish and track annual development expectations for prospecting, grant attainment, grant compliance, as well as, tracking grants to ensure replacement funding.
Marketing and Public Relations
Manage a strong communications/public relations program that will result in increased support and raised community awareness. Ensure the Food Bank’s website is maintained i.e., design, content, and updates/revisions.
Ensure the development and implementation of communications strategies l(adapting existing strategies) to ensure regular stewardship of donors. This includes thank-you campaigns, newsletters, email blasts, as well as new ideas for how we can keep donors (prospects) informed.
Oversee events and community campaigns; including maintaining a predetermined ROI and goal for each fiscal year. Ensure the planning and implementation of funding campaigns, events, and activities. Provide a comprehensive overview of the community relations program and results on an annual basis
Oversee the direct mail program.
Activate constituents to respond to any federal, state, county, or local legislation that addresses food security
Protect the Food Bank’s image by ensuring all forms of internal and external communication are consistent with its mission and vision. Coordinate the production of materials i.e., annual reports, newsletters, brochures, advertisements, signs, posters, displays, etc.
Initiate or is directed by the CEO or CDO to perform additional duties or tasks to support the mission.
Monitoring and Reporting
Monitor weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual activities to achieve gift revenue goals.
Prepare and submit accurate and timely monthly activity reports to senior leadership.
Work within the assigned database and maintain accurate, complete, and timely donor records.
5-7 years of nonprofit fundraising experience, development, and major gift experience preferred;
Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively;
Results-oriented and strong attention to follow-through;
Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision;
Strong writing and oral communication skills; comfortable with diverse groups of people;
Microsoft Office Suite computer skills;
Experience with constituent relationship management system;
Attention to detail and strong project management skills;
Strong sense of customer service and demonstrate the ability to respond with urgency to the needs and requests of others, internally and externally, and ensure a high degree of responsiveness to all donors without regard to their giving level;
Ability to work as part of a team;
