The Development Director is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising and marketing strategy and annual plan to achieve Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank’s mission and strategic goals.

Job responsibilities

• Consistent with the Food Bank’s mission and vision, assist in the development of its
short and long-term Strategic Plan goals with the Board of Directors and staff.

• Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising and marketing strategy and
plan in collaboration with the Executive Director.

• Manage the fundraising and marketing strategy and plan including but not limited to:
individual, social/religious, corporate and foundation gifts; annual giving, major and
planned gift programs, special fundraising events and campaigns to achieve
fundraising and marketing budget and goals.

• Monitor, evaluate and report the results of the fundraising and marketing Strategic
Plan to the Executive Director.

• Analyze fundraising and marketing performance adapting new, or enhancing
existing, strategies to meet the Food Bank’s mission and strategic goals.

• Identify and solicit current and prospective donors; develop and implement a
comprehensive donor cultivation and stewardship plan.

• Oversee administration of financial, food and in-kind donations including recording,
acknowledgement and reconciliation.

• Manage the research, preparation, submission and reporting of grant applications
and major funding proposals.

• Oversee implementation of internal and external (third-party) special events and

• Manage third-party fundraising and marketing vendors (direct mail, digital, web,
graphic design, print, etc.) optimizing performance and achieving strategic goals.

• Oversee the development and distribution of brand consistent, informative and
accurate marketing and communication materials that adhere to internal and
external requirements.

• Represent the Food Bank amongst key stakeholders, at regional meetings and
events, and serve as a spokesperson as appropriate or assigned.

• Serve on board committees; assist Executive Director in development and
maintenance of fundraising and marketing policies and procedures.

• Develop a comprehensive departmental budget and control development
expenditures in accordance with the approved budget.

• Recruit, interview and make recommendation of development hires to the Executive

• Orient, train, develop and schedule development staff.

• Delegate responsibilities, assign and oversee tasks, supervise and evaluate the
performance of development staff.

• Ensure the training of, and adherence to, organizational policies by all staff,
volunteers, and others.

• Provide overall supervision to fundraising/development volunteers

Application qualifications

Qualifications Required:

 Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent plus three to seven years of fundraising
 Knowledge of, or interest in, hunger issues or related social services
 High level of analytical, data interpretation, and problem-solving skills
 Strong communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills
 Strong organization skills and an attention to detail
 Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
 Ability to work independently, exercising initiative and sound judgment
 Computer proficiency including experience with Microsoft Office

Qualifications Preferred:

 Knowledge of, or experience in, hunger industry
 Professional development training
 Knowledge of, our experience with, DonorPerfect
