The Chief Operations Officer (COO) directs the food sourcing, transportation, logistical, and warehouse operations of SHFBM. As a member of the senior leadership team, the COO promotes a work culture that is participatory and collaborative across diverse stakeholder groups and constituencies, helping to lead culture changes consistent with values and strategic direction. The COO will provide the structure and processes necessary to manage the organization’s current operational activities and projected growth, while also being a key partner in implementing the organization’s strategic plan. The COO’s effectiveness will be evaluated by standard, benchmarked operating metrics of efficiency, effectiveness, and mission-impact. This position is responsible for the safe acquisition, storage, and distribution of food, and must follow food safety best practices in accordance with industry standards.

Job responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES AND SPECIFIC RESONSIBILITIES: Include, but are not limited to the following:

• Ensuring operational strategy, practices, and initiatives are aligned with the
organization’s business objectives and support the organization’s growth strategy;
• Responsible for ensuring that operational policies and practices are in compliance
with the standards set by Feeding America, AIB, FDA, USDA, and other regulatory
• Responsible for inventory accuracy including oversight of inventory control system;
• Manage a maintenance program that will ensure that all facilities, equipment, and
vehicles are operational and meet all local, state, and federal regulations;
• Ensure safety program is in effect and staff are aware and trained in all aspects;
• Administrative functions including hiring, performance management, coaching, and
disciplinary actions;
• Fiduciary oversight over all areas of responsibility;
• Work with finance to create departmental budgets;
• Submit monthly and quarterly reports as required;
• Interface with volunteers, community groups, food donors, and potential
collaborative partners to further the SHFBM mission;
• Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Application qualifications

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree with 8-10 years of experience in distribution, supply chain,
operational management, logistics, or equivalent combination of experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior level leadership capacity

• People skills required to lead, motivate and inspire a team, represent SHFBM in the
community, communicate with partners, and collaborate with other food banks;
• Presentation skills and ability to present complex information to employees,
funders, and other stakeholders in both written and verbal formats;
• Experience in workflow management and process improvement;
• Strong organizational skills, including the ability to successfully manage multiple
priorities and projects, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast paced environment;
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work with a high degree of accuracy;
• Commitment to excellent customer service;
• Ability to be innovative, meet or exceed goals, and manage workflow;
• Ability to pass a background check and random drug testing;
• Experience driving continuous process improvement initiatives;
• Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with individuals of diverse
backgrounds, experiences, and personalities;
• Must have a strong financial acumen to develop and manage annual operating
• Exceptional conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills.

SHFBM has a simple core philosophy – to be the most effective community resource possible for the 530,000 individuals living at or below the poverty level in our region. The food bank serves 24 counties in both Carolinas through a network of over 950 partner agencies and a wide range of direct programs, including, Kids Cafes, Backpacks, School Based Mobiles, Rural Mobiles, Senior Boxes, Community Food Rescue, and our Pet Food Bank.

SHFBM is the largest health and human services agency in the Charlotte region with annual revenues (including donated food) of almost 100 million dollars. Annually we distribute over 80 million pounds.

SHFBM has one of the largest volunteer programs in the network, annually amassing close to 300,000 volunteer hours. This, along with excellent stewardship, has made us one of the network’s most efficient food banks.

We have recently completed a capital expansion that raised almost 14 million dollars (all local) and doubled our dry, freezer, cooler, and office space. In addition to our Charlotte headquarters, we manage three satellite branches.

We recently purchased a new facility in Salisbury, NC equal in size to the main facility in Charlotte. The facility includes 35,000 square foot of cooler space.
