May is Older Americans Month

There are 7 million seniors that rely on the Feeding America network of food banks each year. Each May when the President of the United States declares it Older Americans Month, we seize the opportunity to speak up and raise awareness that seniors struggling with hunger.

This year, to bring much-needed relief to seniors, we’re focusing on closing the Senior SNAP Gap. Seniors more than any other age group are eligible but not enrolled in federal benefits programs and it’s time to close this gap.

The Facts on Senior Hunger

The rate of food insecurity among seniors age 60 and older has more than doubled since 2001, and today 1 in 12 seniors face food insecurity in the United States.

Join us in the fight to #SolveSeniorHunger, by getting familiar with the facts:

  • Since 2000, the senior population has increased 29 percent compared to the overall population growth of 12 percent.
  • The number of food-insecure seniors is projected to increase by 50 percent when the youngest of the Baby Boomer generation reaches age 60 in 2025.
  • Food-insecure seniors are at an increased risk for chronic health conditions, including: depression, heart attack, asthma and congestive heart failure.
