Feeding America Leads Charge and Turns OrangeTM to Solve Hunger for 49 Million Americans
Hunger advocates from across the country will be wearing orange on Hunger Action DayTM - Thursday, September 4 - in an effort to raise awareness of the 49 million people in the United States who struggle with hunger. The “Turn Orange” campaign is just one of many events taking place across the country as part of Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger during the month of September.
The month-long campaign garners participation from Feeding America’s network of 200 food banks and thousands of agencies, corporate partners, donors, social followers, and Entertainment Council members, and strives to engage the public at large.
Every September, the Feeding America network kicks off the awareness month by hosting events throughout the country to inspire people to take action. Activities include everything from asking businesses across the country to light their buildings orange (the symbolic color of hunger) to food packing events at food banks across the country. Thousands of volunteers are expected to participate in food bank activities throughout the United States.
“There is more than enough food to feed every man, woman and child in this country, yet one in six Americans are facing hunger,” said Bob Aiken, CEO of Feeding America, the nation’s leading hunger-relief organization. “By raising awareness and working together, we can solve hunger."
Some of the events taking place across the country include:
Feeding America makes it easy to get involved in the movement with their new Hunger Action Month App that allows users to connect with their local food bank, change their social media profiles a shade of orange, share pre-crafted social media posts, ask Members of Congress to visit child feeding programs and pledge to support child hunger initiatives.
