Statement Attributable to Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America
"Feeding America applauds the U.S. Senate for today's passage of the Agriculture Appropriations bill. The bill passed by the Senate is a marked improvement over the House-passed bill, which contained deep cuts to programs providing essential nutrition assistance to low-income seniors, expectant mothers, infants, children and struggling families.
The need for food assistance has increased dramatically during the prolonged and severe recession. Hunger hits every state and county in America, with one in six people facing food insecurity. With continued high unemployment – currently above 9 percent nationally – rising food and gas prices and a decline in private food donations, that need is expected to continue to remain high for several years to come and strong federal nutrition assistance programs will continue to be essential to meeting that need.
"We thank the U.S. Senate for protecting funding for hunger-relief programs. As the House and Senate work to reconcile the differences in their funding levels, we urge the conferees to adopt the funding levels for nutrition assistance programs contained in the Senate-passed substitute of the FY2012 Agriculture Appropriations legislation (H.R. 2112)."
