7-Eleven Launches Fundraising Canister Campaign with Feeding America to Coincide with Hunger Action Month

September 11, 2012

To mark Hunger Action Month, 7-Eleven, Inc. is kicking off a national awareness and fund-raising campaign to benefit Feeding America and the 37 million Americans it serves. Through the end of the year, customers at participating 7-Eleven® stores can make donations of cash and spare change in specially marked canisters at the stores' sales counter. For Feeding America, $1 can help provide eight meals at local food banks.

Feeding America is the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity engaged in efforts to end hunger in this country. Through a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks and more than 61,000 agencies, the national organization helps feed hungry children, families, individuals and senior citizens throughout every county in the U.S. According to hunger statistics provided by Feeding America, one in five children in the U.S. – nearly 17 million – struggle with hunger.

"Youth well-being is a philanthropic focus for 7-Eleven and fighting child hunger is a priority," said Nancy Lear, community relations manager for 7-Eleven. "We believe Feeding America is the country's most efficient, effective organization at helping local food banks provide nutritious meals to those who need it most. Our hope is that when our guests stop by to purchase something to eat or drink at our stores they remember those who can't and drop their spare change in the Feeding America collection canister."

Funds raised will help support local Feeding America-member food banks in the specific communities where monies are raised.

"It's a shame that in the 'land of plenty' there are people who have to worry about how they will get their next meal," said Leah Ray, vice president of corporate partnerships at Feeding America. "Together, we can spread the word that hunger is real; hunger is solvable, and action matters. Everyone can make a difference, and we are proud to partner with 7-Eleven as the company assists us in raising money and spreading the word about Hunger Action Month."

Through local and national food-assistance programs, Feeding America is able to help provide nutritious, fresh foods to Americans struggling with hunger; safe and nurturing places for children to have a meal; emergency assistance for disaster victims, as well as self-sufficiency programs for adults trying to break the cycle of poverty and hunger.

7-Eleven introduced its charitable collection-canister program in 1976. The company began placing canisters on its store counters as a public service, creating awareness of and raising funds for select charities. Over the last 36 years, the store canister campaigns have raised more than $100 million for a number of causes, including safety, education, health & wellness, and disaster relief.
