Because they often need medication to maintain their health, many older Americans forgo the foods they also need to stay healthy. It is a cycle that can carry devastating consequences.
Each May, Feeding America recognizes Older Americans Month by drawing attention to what I believe is a silent issue -- senior hunger.
In discussions of hunger relief, seniors often get pushed to the background. This is because seniors are not the type to ask a lot for themselves and many do not like to ask for help. Yet, there are so many seniors who are struggling to get by.
In America, nearly 5 million people over the age of 60 face hunger. These are people who have worked hard their entire lives, but now live on fixed incomes that can force them to choose between paying for health care and buying groceries. Because they often need medication to maintain their health, many older Americans forgo the foods they also need to stay healthy. It is a cycle that can carry devastating consequences.
At Feeding America, we have taken several steps to solve senior hunger and prevent this cycle from beginning. We work to raise awareness of the issue, increase access of services to seniors in need and provide appropriate interventions to respond to seniors' needs. The Senior Grocery Program is an example of an intervention we have implemented recently through several of our member food banks. The Senior Grocery Program provides supplemental food that meets the specific nutritional needs of older adults. Seniors can easily pick up their groceries at convenient times from their local food pantry. This gives seniors to food they need, freeing up their money for medicine that they need to manage their health.
The initiatives and programs Feeding America is launching are making great strides in the fight against hunger. We help feed more than 3 million seniors each year. Yet, we cannot solve senior hunger alone. We need your help. Visit here to learn how you can help get food to seniors in need. Together, we can solve senior hunger and make sure every senior in America can enjoy their golden years happily, healthfully and hunger free.
