This App Will Help Restaurants Donate the Insane Amount of Food They Usually Waste | Fast Company

An enormous amount of food is wasted in the United States. 72 billion pounds of safe, wholesome food does not make it to the kitchen table every year in our country. With the help of a new mobile platform called MealConnect, Feeding America has helped facilitate donations from stores and restaurants to the tune of 737,000 pickups and moved over 333 million pounds of food — enough for 278 million meals. When there's no school lunch in St. Louis, food vans help fill the gap | St. Louis Post-Dispatch

More than 22 million children receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program during the school year. But when school is out during the summer, less than 4 million receive meals through the USDA Summer Food Service Program. In Ohio, nearly 18 percent of residents age 60 and older struggle with food security. That makes the state one of the 10 worst in the country when it comes to the senior-hunger challenge, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Household Food Security Measure.
