Last week I attended a baby shower for my long-time good friend, Caroline and her husband Tim in New York City. Caroline and Tim are both in finance, Harvard Business School graduates and live and work in New York City where they will be welcoming their first child (a girl!) this summer. Like most baby showers there were games, finger foods and a lot of laughter and love as we gathered together to celebrate the mother and father to be. However, unlike most baby showers this event did not involve take-home key chains or personalized photo frames as party favors. Instead Caroline chose to make a donation in the name of each of her guests to Feeding America to help support our organization’s work-around child feeding programs during the summer months. In short, she decided to take a moment during her celebration to pause and shift the focus from her child, one that will surely be well loved and provided for, to the millions of children nationwide that while loved have parents that struggle to provide them with the nutritious food they need to learn and play.

Caroline and TimI appreciate that Caroline recognizes that summer is not a carefree time for all children in the United States and that for some kids their top concern has not been who would advance into the next round of the World Cup but where their next meal would come from – given that nearly 90 percent of children who rely on free or reduced-price meals via their schools lose that access during the summer. I also appreciate that Caroline’s donations will be put to good use by Feeding America food banks. Food banks like the Food Bank of Larimer County in Fort Collins, CO which has its own kitchen where it prepares made-from-scratch delicious, healthy meals that are then distributed to children via their participation as a sponsor in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and Great Plains Food Bank in Fargo, ND which has expanded its summer meals program this year into previously unserved rural counties.

Consider joining Caroline and Tim in supporting Feeding America’s work to provide meals to children during the summer by participating in the ConAgra Foods partnership with Kid President, Robby Novak, to inspire Americans to take action so that kids can “be awesome this summer.” For every view, like or share of Kid President’s video through July 31, the ConAgra Foods Foundation will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization, up to one million meals. So, “Be Awesome This Summer.” All it takes is a simple click to help us get more food to more children in need.
