During my last semester at Loyola University Chicago, I was determined to stretch my altruistic muscles and support a good cause before I entered blindly into adulthood. Unfortunately, as a college student, I didn't have the disposable monetary funds available to purchase a cup of coffee, let alone support a charity. I did, however, have the skills that I learned in my communication classes and I wanted to put them to good use.

Earlier this year, I visited an amazing pantry in Wheaton, Illinois called People's Resource Center, a partner agency to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. I volunteered to staff the bread station and pass out loaves of bread to clients. As a young woman approached me, I asked her just one simple question.

Here at Feeding America we are constantly seeing lots of small actions adding up to a big impact. Whether it is one person taking a few hours out of their weekend to volunteer, or a classroom holding a food drive, all of these actions make it possible for us to feed 37 million people in need each year.

It's an extraordinary and daunting undertaking: tens of thousands of agency interviews done online for the first time and tens of thousands of client interviews to be completed in approximately 20 weeks across the U.S. This is a formidable research project under any scenario, but especially in our case, since it is executed with volunteer researchers and coordinated by food bank staff that must also focus on continuing to provide services to meet a persistently high level of need.

This "dinner" meal served to children who are enrolled in the school breakfast and lunch programs is an important cog in improving learning ability and comprehension among at-risk kids. St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance and Kids Cafe are committed to the idea that no child deserves to go to bed hungry, and today's advancement is another step in that direction!
