Once a month, I take a few hours out of my day and volunteer at a local pantry in my neighborhood where fresh produce is the star of the show on the third Monday of every month. Clients line up well before the start of the distribution and the line wraps around the block. I've gotten to know many of the regulars, including mothers with small children. Being a new mother myself has given me a whole different sense of providing for my children. It's also kept me very aware of my present life.

I was very apprehensive going into client data collection. I did not feel comfortable approaching people and asking them to take a 20-30 minute survey without knowing their situation or their day's schedule.

Food insecurity is a public health epidemic that affects 49 million Americans, and is particularly prevalent in our most vulnerable communities. One in five households with children are food insecure.Despite this terrible reality, some commentators continue to question whether food insecurity even exists in America. For that reason, Feeding America launched the Map the Meal Gap project. By demonstrating where food insecurity lurks in America, the project challenges people who look the other way.
