Reading through the Feeding America 2012 annual report, I took a moment to be proud of all that we accomplished last year. I hope you'll take this opportunity to do the same. Your commitment enabled the initiatives detailed in this report — you volunteered to fight hunger in your community, you used social media to raise awareness, and you donated to distribute 3.39 billion pounds of food to people in need.

It's an extraordinary and daunting undertaking: tens of thousands of agency interviews done online for the first time and tens of thousands of client interviews to be completed in approximately 20 weeks across the U.S. This is a formidable research project under any scenario, but especially in our case, since it is executed with volunteer researchers and coordinated by food bank staff that must also focus on continuing to provide services to meet a persistently high level of need.

The Redwood Empire Food Bank, located in Sonoma County, Calif., is one of three food banks piloting the Feeding America Diabetes Initiative, a project funded by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation and aimed at improving the health and wellness of low-income adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Seligman is Assistant Professor of Medicine at University of California San Francisco whose research focuses on the issue of food insecurity and its relationship to obesity. The Mississippi Food Network isn't a large organization, but it definitely has a large mission. The food bank serves approximately 100,000 people a month and feels a responsibility to not just provide food, but nutrition education as well.

Food Share Food Bank serves Ventura County, Calif., an area rich with fruit and vegetable farms. Unfortunately, the area is also plagued by poverty and hunger. Fresh produce is expensive. The workers tending the farms often can't afford to feed their children the healthy food they help grow.
