This past Thanksgiving I was able to get our entire Thanksgiving meal from a local food pantry. We received a turkey, cranberries and potatoes—everything I needed to give my kids a normal, happy holiday. This week I plan on going to the food pantry for the items we need to make our Christmas meal. Without the extra help from pantries there is no way I would be able to make the holidays special for my kids. Life may be hard sometimes, but my kids mean the world to me—I am so grateful we get to celebrate the holidays together.

If it is this hard for me to sit down and focus for 30 minutes before lunch what would I do if I knew there was no lunch coming? During my two years in Missouri I have set a lot of goals for myself. I want answers to these questions, reasons for the actions being taken, and most importantly I want to make sure that no kid in our 16 counties has to feel those hunger pains on a regular bases again.

Decisions around cuts to critical nutrition programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) are expected to be made within the next few weeks. The Senate has proposed nearly $4 billion in cuts to SNAP over a 10 year time period. The House has proposed a severe $39 billion in cuts to SNAP over a ten year time period. Please ask your representatives to protect SNAP in the farm bill.

Sikeston, Missouri is the farthest north cotton grows, the home of the throwed rolls, the beginning of southern hospitality, and my new home. Moving to a new place is always a culture shock. You ask for a pop and they say soda. The people can dress differently, think differently, eat catfish spaghetti, and get dirty in their supped-up monster truck on purpose. Diversity exists in everything we do. This is especially true when you are looking to solve a problem.

As I conclude my first month at God's Pantry Food Bank, I know that my two-year journey on the road to finding ways to alleviate child hunger has just begun. Before my role as a Child Hunger Corps Member at God's Pantry Food Bank, I didn't realize how food insecurity affected so many people in Kentucky and even in my hometown of Lexington, Kentucky.
