During National Nutrition Month, we will be highlighting programs across our network that are finding unique ways to get nutritious foods to people struggling with hunger. This story comes from San Antonio Food Bank in Texas.
The San Antonio Food Bank is truly a leader in the area of nutrition. The food bank demonstrates its dedication to health through many programs, including its Community Garden initiative and farmers markets.
A few years back, the San Antonio Food Bank created a community garden on approximately five acres of land. Last year alone, the garden produced 40,000 pounds of fresh produce — all of which was given to area food shelves. The garden gives people facing hunger a unique opportunity to access local, organic fruits and vegetables. The city of San Antonio recently donated 23 acres of land to the food bank, which means that in 2014, its community garden will evolve to a community farm — capable of producing hundreds of thousands pounds of produce.
The San Antonio Food Bank also provides produce to low-income populations by hosting two farmers markets. These markets accept SNAP benefits (formerly Food Stamps) and are located in areas known to be food deserts. They give a community who would otherwise go without, access to fresh foods and a healthier life.
