Statement Attributable to Matt Knott, President of Feeding America

“Feeding America strongly endorses the Hunger Free Summer for Kids Act, which will make great strides in reducing child hunger during the summer months, when children are out of school and not able to access school breakfast and lunch.

“While the summer meal program is a critical support for millions of families, most low-income children – 82% of those receiving free and reduced price lunch during the school year – are not receiving summer meals. Barriers include transportation and a lack of accessible sites.

“Nearly 9 million low-income children live in communities that are ineligible to operate open summer feeding sites, and millions more are unable to reach a site that is operating in their community.

“Nutrition is critical to our children’s ability to grow and thrive. But for too many of our nation’s children, summer is a time of hardship and hunger.  We are proud to support this legislation which makes meaningful strides toward eliminating child hunger.

“We applaud the bi-partisan leadership of U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) and co-sponsors Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Joe Donnelly (D-IN), who introduced this legislation and look forward to working with both the Senate Agriculture Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee to ensure these policies are included in the Child Nutrition Reauthorization this year.”
