October 28, 2015

The Congress and the White House released a two-year bipartisan budget-debt ceiling deal, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 (BBA), which would raise spending caps on discretionary programs that would restore critical funding to programs that help low-income families, children and seniors like Meals on Wheels, Head Start, housing assistance and job training.

The deal demonstrates that deficit reduction can be accomplished while ensuring an adequate safety-net for our most vulnerable citizens.

The legislation also averts the risk of an unprecedented default on our nation’s obligations by suspending the debt limit and paves the way to avert a government shutdown when the current Continuing Resolution expires on December 11th.

Millions of families continue to struggle in the wake of the recession, facing impossible tradeoffs between paying for food or paying the rent, keeping the lights on or filling a prescription.

Replacing harmful, across-the-board sequestration cuts with a more balanced approach will ensure more children and seniors can access the nutrition they need to remain healthy and that more families can get back on their feet.

We urge the House of Representatives and the Senate to promptly pass the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015.
