Job Responsibilities

Major Donor Stewardship

Develop and expand a portfolio of major gift prospects by making telephone calls and face-to-face visits for the purpose of discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
Implement methods to capture and report on pertinent donor/prospect information in donor database.
Ensure confidentiality and security of all donor related information.
Conduct and support the networking, identification, cultivation, and retention of donors.
Department Oversight/Personnel Management and Supervision
Provide vision, strategic planning, direction and evaluation for Development and Communications Department.
Direct hiring, training and supervision of team members, including paid staff and volunteers/interns.
Support team members by: establishing performance objectives and measuring progress toward goals; leading team meetings; developing team members’ skills and abilities, both individually and as a group, in order to increase effectiveness; and ensuring that employees have access to the resources needed to be successful.
Conduct performance reviews.
Provide counseling/coaching to ensure successful performance, and utilizes performance management processes as necessary, including use of proper documentation.
Guide a very successful development team to peak performance.

Department Strategic Planning

Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan to ensure that department meets or exceeds annual development goals through a variety of strategies including direct response, events, major gifts, grants, and sponsorships.
Provide regular reporting and analysis of solicitation efforts and donor activity across the development program to, but not limited to, President/CEO; Board of Directors; Feeding America; Finance Department.
Collaborate with development team to ensure that research on active and prospective donors is regularly conducted and analyzed.
Effectively mine the existing donor database to drive the strategies and work of the development programs.
Work with President/CEO and Board of Directors on endowment and planned gift offerings.
Strengthen and expand SHFB’s major gift program.
Proactively connect all department initiatives to strengthen outcomes and prevent duplication.
Manage direct response program with external vendor.
Develop and monitor an effective department budget.


Lead communications and media strategies with Communications Manager.
Facilitate brand awareness research and projects to build brand awareness.
Oversee all public and donor communications, including: website content, social media presence, fact sheets, marketing materials, newsletters, annual report, etc.

Executive Management

Participate on the executive management team.
Regularly communicate department activities and initiatives to other SHFB departments.
Provide support and liaison to other Foodbank constituents; Operations, Agency Services, Board of Directors, other Foodbanks, and the national office, where relevant and appropriate.
Work in conjunction with and communicate with Foodbank Accounting department.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Application Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college/university
  • Extensive background directing fund development plans and activities and working 1:1 with donors.
  • Experience with direct solicitation through and oversight of major gifts program, fundraising events, marketing and communication activities, and grant management.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to set own priorities and work independently
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate organizational needs.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Regular access to dependable transportation with insurance levels of 100/300/50
  • Ability to travel throughout service area for meetings.
  • Ability to successfully pass background check
  • Previous experience with Raiser’s Edge and NXT is strongly desired.

Additional Information

The Director of Development & Communications is responsible for the planning, budgeting, execution, and evaluation of Second Harvest Foodbank’s overall development and communications strategies to generate funding for its programs and to promote organizational visibility. Essential functions will include; stewardship of major donors, department oversight, strategic planning for the department as well as participation in organizational leadership initiatives.
