|About the Organization||
Based in Silicon Valley, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties (“Second Harvest”) is one of the largest food banks in the nation. Currently providing food to more than one quarter of a million people every month, Second Harvest is a trusted community-based organization that was founded in 1974. Despite the immense wealth in Silicon Valley, and partly due to the high cost of living, hunger and malnutrition are pervasive. The Food Bank distributes nutritious food, including more fresh produce than any other food bank in the country, through a network of nearly 320 nonprofit partners at more than 850 sites. Second Harvest is pursuing innovative efforts to increase access to food resources, as it seeks to feed an additional 100,000 hungry people each month. To reach more people, it advocates for anti-hunger policies and connects those in need to federal nutrition programs and other food resources. Second Harvest enjoys the trust of more than 50,000 local donors who continue to invest in its mission year after year. It is consistently recognized as a charity of choice from multiple sources. Charity Navigator has granted Second Harvest a 4-star rating for 10 years in a row, placing it in the top 1% of charities nationwide; in fact, in 2016 Charity Navigator ranked Second Harvest as one of the top 50 charities in the United States. Readers from “Metro’s Best of Silicon Valley” voted Second Harvest as the Best Organization Making a Difference. In 2012, OpportunityKnocks.org ranked Second Harvest as the top nonprofit to work for in the country. Second Harvest is a member of Feeding America, a national network of 200 food banks, where it ranks as the top fundraising food bank in the country. Second Harvest is a nearly $130 million revenue generating organization (including value of donated food) with a $41 million cash budget. The FY2017 philanthropic revenue goal is $37 million. Ninety percent of the annual operating revenues are raised from private sources.
