The COPO will have a multi-faceted mandate. Charged with overseeing many of the operational aspects of the organization, the new executive will have significant responsibility for the very heart of the organization, providing the executional capabilities that will turn the strategic plan from a board-mandated aspiration into working reality. There are several key components:

1. PREPARE THE ORGANIZATION FOR VASTLY INCREASED DEMAND
SHH is proud of its reputation for operational excellence, and it remains committed to practicing and even creating best practices to ensure more hungry people have more access to more nutritious meals. Working closely with the leadership team and community of partners throughout SHH’s 59-county service area and beyond, the COPO must help SHH drive more nutritious meals through multiple program channels to meet its neighbors’ needs.

2. SUPPORT END-TO-END QUALITY IN OPERATIONS, PROGRAMS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE
SHH serves nearly 1000 local “retail” partners (food shelves, meal programs, shelters) but also operates innovative programming that supports its neighbors directly. While “wholesaling” remains the largest segment of SHH’s business, the COPO will need to prioritize excellent partner relationships and service, as well devise and integrate new partnerships, including schools and health care organizations, as appropriate.

3. DRIVE DIVERSE TALENT AND PROVIDE LEADERSHIP INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY
The human element is critical and the COPO will be the focal point for considerable collaboration inside and outside the organization. This leader must exude SHH values and support a staff culture of excellence and inclusivity that places the client at the center of SHH’s work, balancing an environment that is simultaneously demanding and supportive, efficient and compassionate. The new leader will work across multiple departments and organizations and must also continue to attract and retain an exceptionally talented and diverse staff.

Application Qualifications

Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Operations or related field. Experience & Credentials
• 10+ years of COO or similar leadership experience required.
• Prior experience in both corporate and non-profit preferred.
• Demonstrated success in leading the development and implementation of continuous improvement processes.
• Demonstrated ability in managing performance and leading cross-functional teams to deliver plans.
• Ability to effectively and efficiently communicate with people at all levels of an organization.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent writing/editing skills.
• Strong computer skills.
• Ability to travel as required with valid driver’s license with good driving record.

About the Organization

SHH was created on October 1, 2001, when Second Harvest Greater Minneapolis and Second Harvest St. Paul joined forces to bring together more than 44 years of combined history and experience to the fight against hunger.

LOCATION
SHH’s currently operates out of two facilities, including its primary distribution site and headquarters in Maplewood, MN as well as a leased volunteer service center in Golden Valley. SHH has just purchased a new 230,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Brooklyn Park to house its future headquarters and distribution, though we will maintain a service and volunteer facility in the East Metro.

Additional Information

Reporting to the President/CEO, the Chief Operations and Programs Officer (COPO) serves on the Executive Leadership Team and works collaboratively with the CFO and Chief Philanthropy Officer. The COPO is the senior position responsible for driving and overseeing all end-to-end sourcing and distribution of meals to our community, including partner relations and programs. The COPO is also responsible for leading growth initiatives and executing the strategic plans of the organization.

The COPO is responsible for the development of sustainable, effective business processes and organizational learning to drive business excellence. She/he will assist in raising the skills and abilities of staff at all levels to use continuous improvement strategies and techniques. The COPO will support excellence in SHH’s core business operations and must be a creative, strategic thinker to incorporate new initiatives into their work. The position must hire and support exceptional staff to manage the largest part of Second Harvest Heartland’s business.

The COPO has accountability for $100 million of the annual budget with 7 direct reports and overall responsibility for approximately 100 employees. The COPO will oversee all operating divisions, including field services, transportation, food sourcing and food bank operations.
