Job Responsibilities

The Director of Operations ensures that the responsibility, authority and accountability of all direct subordinates are defined, understood and well executed and that staff have opportunities for professional development. Ensures the prompt and fair evaluation of employee performance. This position participates in, creates and executes along with the Board of Directors, Executive Director and other leadership team members, the strategic plan and other policies and processes necessary to manage the Foodbank’s current activities and its projected growth. He will coordinate plans for further development of existing as well as future programs to increase the output and efficiencies of program activities in keeping with the demand of various kinds of food assistance. In partnership with the appropriate management staff, this person coordinates the efforts to evaluate the results of each area of operations and systematically report these results to the Executive Director, leadership team, staff members and the Board of Directors as appropriate. He will ensure that all organization activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations. He will cultivate positive relations with program participants, agencies, donors, volunteers and other constituents and Foodbank staff. Promotes and facilitates collaboration, communication and information flow among all RBFB staff to ensure operational efficiency and success. Lastly, he will ensure the timely completion and filing of the Quarterly Pulse Report (QPR) to Feeding America and provides a copy to the Executive Director.

Bachelor's Degree is required; Master’s Degree is desirable Previous foodbanking experience is desirable Previous experience in warehousing/distribution, facilities and fleet management, including 6-8 years as a supervisor Long-range planning and follow-through skills Ability to multi-task with a strong sense of meeting goals and deadlines Excellent leadership and communication skills Excellent interpersonal, negotiating and relationship skills Ability to work well collaboratively and independently Computer proficiency including experience in MS Word and Excel Ability to drive continuous improvement in operations of significant scope An interest in hunger issues and helping to end hunger in our service area

This position comes with a full range of employee benefits including a generous amount of PTO days and holidays. We offer health, dental and vision insurances paid 99% by the foodbank and dependent coverage for these insurances paid 50% by the employer. There also are life and long term disability insurances paid 100% by the Foodbank. We offer a simple employee pension plan where the Foodbank contributes at a tiered level of funding depending on length of service after one full year of employment. About the Organization

Founded in 1982, River Bend Foodbank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. RBFB has a network of more than 300 agency partners including food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, residential treatment facilities, day care centers, and senior centers. Collectively, these programs are the food safety net for tens of thousands of struggling individuals and families in the 22 counties served by River Bend Foodbank in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. John Deere contributed seed money to rent warehouse space and to hire an executive director and warehouse manager. In the first year of operation, 190,000 pounds of food was distributed. In 2014, River Bend Foodbank moved from Moline, IL to our current 60,000 square foot warehouse in Davenport, IA. This move was needed in order to accomplish our goal of feeding everyone in eastern IA and western IL. In 2016, 11 million meals were distributed to the hungry in our service area.

Additional Information

The Director of Operations is responsible for the overall coordination, management and supervision of the RBFB’s total operational activities in support of goals, policies and objectives established by the Executive Director in conjunction with the Board of Directors and the Foodbank’s Leadership Team.  This position will guide and directs the Director of Warehouse and other staff members in overall RBFB operations including acquisition, storage and distribution of all food and non-food donations and purchases. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Develop and execute capacity plans in a timely manner sufficient to achieve the Foodbanks strategic goals
- Drive continuous improvement in all aspects of Foodbank operations
- Ensure full compliance with operational standards that are applied to us, including Feeding America, AIB, FDA, USDA, DOT and OSHA.  In addition, develop and continually raise standards of safety, food safety, cleanliness, customer service and operational excellence.
- Take a lead role in disaster planning and emergency response
 

River Bend Foodbank is one of the fastest growing food banks in the country, having increased distribution by almost 60% in the last two years. At this rate, we need to add an operations leader to our current team in order to support that growth. While the current staff will continue managing day-to-day operations, the incumbent will plan for and develop the operational capacity to stay in front of that growth. Located along the scenic Mississippi River, the food bank serves 22 counties in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. River Bend relocated to an existing 60,000 sq.ft. facility in 2014 in order to make this growth possible, with the overarching goal of its new Strategic Plan being to triple distribution over the next 10 years in order to close the Meal Gap. Yet its culture remains highly participative, with a commitment to “feeling small” in order to avoid the silos and politics of larger organizations. We seek an experienced operations leader looking to make a significant difference toward ending hunger and have fun doing it.
